Yep, I got the chance to watch Sam Raimi’s return to horror, Drag Me To Hell last night and, to say the least, I am pleased.
I think that the film really followed along the lines of The Evil Dead in regards to humor and “ew” moments. There were some nasty-funny scenes and some scenes that were just plain gross. You would have to see it to know what I mean. Anyway, let’s dive in.

Drag Me To Hell begins with a cursed boy being dragged to hell as a woman and his family tries to save his him. We then pick up several years later with a Loan Officer, named Christine (Alison Lohman), who is desperatly battling to obtain a promotion at her bank job.
When an old woman ends up at her desk and requests an extension on her house, the choice is left up to Christine. In light of trying to get the promotion she wants so badly, she denies the old woman an extension. As the woman begs, Christine backs away and calls for security, “shaming” the old woman.
After work, Christine is heading to her car as some crazy things start happening and the old woman appears, seemingly trying to kill her. After the humorous, nasty battle ends, the old woman places a curse on a Christine’s coat button and gives it back to her.
Throughout the next several scenes, weird, crazy, and nasty things take place forcing Christine to convince her boyfriend, Clay (Justin Long) to take her to someone that may be able to help. After they realize she is cursed, Christine tries everything to rid herself of it.
She even visits the house of the old woman, finding that she has suddenly passed away. When it seems she is running out of options, she opts to sacrifice her kitten. Next, Christine and Clay travel to Clay’s parents house to have dinner. Thinking that she has rid herself of the curse, Christine begins to impress Clay’s family.
However, the curse has not been lost. Christine evetually ends up back at the woman’s house we saw at the beginning of the film, and tries to summon and destroy the evil spirit trying to consume her. When this fails, Christine learns that she must give the cursed object to someone else to transfer the curse.
She then ponders upon several candidates and ultimately decides to give it back to the old woman. She digs up the body, gives her the button and all seems fine. However, it seems the envelope with the button in it had been switched, and Christine finally meets her end.
Overall, this was an enjoyable film by Sam Raimi. I’m not sure of any area of improvements, other than maybe placing an R rating and vamping up on the gore. If you haven’t seen Evil Dead and don’t know what to expect… my advise is to watch Evil Dead first.
Be advised–this is nothing like Spider-Man. Let us know what you think after you’ve seen it.
