I’ve been following the controversial story of the DirecTV commercials since last week and I have to tell you, if this doesn’t put an end to them, I don’t know what will.
It all started when DirecTV decided to air one of their commercials that interrupts a scene of a popular movie. I think I’ve seen this done with Alien and the National Lampoon’s Vacation movies, but I know there are more. The new commercial, however, was controversial because it showcased a scene from Tommy Boy, starring David Spade and the late Chris Farley in the famous “fat guy in a little coat” scene.
Now, before your imagination starts running wild, they didn’t really bother with altering Chris Farley’s performance, but rather David Spade did all the talking. Many people blame Spade on wanting to cash in on his friend, but apparently his family gave the approval to use the footage.
Personally, I think the commercial was done in bad taste, but yet I’m a bit torn by it. Yes, they probably shouldn’t have altered the scene at all for an advertisement, but at least they didn’t make Farley spew out the ad. I don’t know, it is a touchy subject.
Speaking of touchy subjects, LandlineTV has created a fake rendition of possible places DirecTV could take us if they are allowed to continue these tasteless commercials (Thanks /Film). The scenes range from showing Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight to John F. Kennedy.
Please understand that this was meant to be a spoof.
Have a look at the video below.
So, what do you think? Is DirecTV going a bit too far? Are these scenes containing dead actors used as marketing ploys okay? Let us know in the comments.
